For the second time in as many weekends, Franklin softball faced some real late-inning adversity on Saturday. For the second time, the Grizzlies delivered.
Kaylee Stewart's go-ahead RBI single capped a seven-run seventh inning that powered the Griz to a 10-9 win over Denison in their first game at Transylvania's Pioneer Classic.Â
"They battled hard for that comeback," Franklin coach Britt Harvey said. "We are learning every time we get on the field."
The Grizzlies were down 4-0 after three innings against Denison and still trailed, 9-3, going into the final inning. But 12 batters later, they had the upper hand.
Zoey Kugelman and
Kaylee Stewart led off the frame with back-to-back singles, and another base hit from
Jaylee Fansler brought Kugelman home.
Kendall Lowry plated Stewart with a single to left and Fansler scored on a sacrifice fly by
Ruth Kaiser, cutting it to 9-6, before
Kali Laycock singled to drive Lowry in.
Franklin (3-1) then loaded the bases with two out for Kugelman, who singled to send Laycock and
Jasmine Day across with the tying runs. Next, Stewart ripped a base hit up the middle to score
Rylan DeHart with the go-ahead run.
Reliever
Lauren Duncan gave up a pair of singles but retired the last two hitters to strand the potential tying and winning runs. She went the last three innings to save it for starter
Kamzi Gross (1-0).Â
Kugelman and Fansler had three hits apiece for the Grizzlies, with Stewart, Lowry, Laycock and Day each adding two.
The Griz ran into a buzzsaw in their second game, with Millikin hurler Alyssa Dralle yielding just one hit to outduel Kugelman and
Rylan Young in a 4-0 defeat. Day had the lone Franklin hit, a double in the fifth inning.
Franklin is right back in action Sunday with a home doubleheader against Aurora. The first game is slated to start at 1 p.m.
