Baseball Powers Past Benedictine in Seven Innings

Chase Wagner delivered a powerful pitching performance for Franklin baseball on Friday. Eventually, the Griz bats joined in the fun as well.

Wagner tossed a complete game, saving the Grizzlies' bullpen for a pair of Saturday games, and his teammates clobbered four home runs over the final four innings to help cap off a 15-4 rout of Benedictine on a sunny afternoon at Center Grove High School.

"Chase Wagner was absolutely an impact player," Franklin coach Lance Marshall said. "He pitched very well, pitched us out of some poor defensive plays, and then the offense eventually got going."

The visiting Eagles got single runs in each of the first two innings, the second of those unearned, but the Grizzlies (2-2) got Wagner a lead in the bottom of the third. Josh Girvan doubled into the right-center field gap to score Brady Bishop and Nic Deering, then stole third and trotted in on a two-out single up the middle by Alex Billman.

Benedictine tied it at 3-3 in the top of the fourth before committing five errors in the bottom of the frame — miscues that Franklin took full advantage of with six runs on just two hits. Brady Redman, Noah Loveall and Deering all scored on Eagle gaffes, and Billman then crushed a three-run homer out to the parking lot in center, stretching the Griz lead to 9-3.

Redman and Loveall added back-to-back solo blasts in the fifth, with Bishop adding third run on a double steal.

After leaving the bases loaded in the sixth inning, the Grizzlies walked it off with three runs in the seventh. Girvan doubled and scored on a Dyllan Redmon base hit, and Nolan McLane delivered his second game-ending hit in as many games by ripping a two-run homer to right field.

Wagner was solid throughout, scattering eight hits and yielding just one earned run. He struck out five without a walk.

Offensively, Billman led the way with four RBIs; he was joined in the two-hit club by Girvan, Redmon and Loveall. Six different Grizzlies scored two runs apiece.

The team will be back at it on Saturday afternoon, facing North Central at 1 p.m. and Ripon immediately thereafter.

"We've just got to get better every time out," Marshall said, "and I think we're doing that so far."
