Franklin women's basketball has been dominant at home all season long, so it was only fitting that the last game at the Spurlock Center followed the same script.
Twenty-point games from
Molly Schulte and
Payton Seay — who both keyed a third-quarter surge to break things open — helped the second-seeded Grizzlies to an 83-59 rout of No. 7 Bluffton in the quarterfinal round of the HCAC tournament on Saturday afternoon.
The Griz improved to 20-6 overall, hitting the 20-win mark for the first time since the 2012-13 season. They now advance into a semifinal game this coming Friday afternoon (Feb. 27, 3 p.m.) against No. 3 seed Anderson at Transylvania.
"We played our game and got it done," Franklin coach
Ashley Blanch said. "We're looking forward to another week on the court together and preparing for next weekend."
"When we get in a flow, when we run on offense, get in transition, our defense responds to it and it just becomes easy for us," Schulte added.
The visiting Beavers held their ground through an 18-18 first quarter and led 21-20 early in the second before Schulte knocked down a 3-pointer and then converted a layup off a
Kate Breeden steal to put the Grizzlies back on top for good. Bluffton got back to within a point, but Franklin ended the half with a 7-0 run, capped when
Jordan Coon banked a 3-pointer off the glass just before time expired for a 41-33 lead.
Seay and Schulte got the second half started with a 9-2 push, capped by a Schulte 3 that stretched it to 50-35 with 8:10 to go in the third. A Seay jumper at the 3:58 mark pushed the Griz lead to 61-39, and Bluffton didn't get any closer than 14 points after that.
Schulte had it going offensively for most of the day, going 8 for 13 from the field.
"Once I see it go in once, I tend to get kind of hot," Schulte said. "So it was a nice second quarter, nice second half."
In addition to the 20-pieces from Seay and Schulte, the Grizzlies also got 16 points from Coon, 11 from
Briley Munchel and nine from
Lydia Wright. Breeden had four steals to lead an energized defense that forced 25 Beaver turnovers.
Franklin now turns its attention to Anderson after the two squads split during the regular season, each winning on its home floor.
"We feel confident," Schulte said of the path ahead. "Our coaching staff's got a good plan for us, we're ready to work. We're ready to do everything it takes to bring home the championship."
