The plus side of having two matches in a day is the opportunity to fix anything that went wrong in the first one.
Franklin men's volleyball took advantage of said opportunity on Saturday, bouncing back from a morning defeat to earn its first victory of the season, a 26-24, 25-21, 26-28, 25-17 win over Rockford.
"I thought we did a really, really nice job of handling the pace and really controlling the tempo of the game," Taylor said. "We set goals for the team and they met all three of them in that match."
The morning match against St. Norbert saw the Griz (1-6) commit 26 attacking errors, a dozen of those in the third set alone on the way to a 25-17, 25-17, 25-19 setback. Afterward, coach
Dillon Taylor challenged his troops to make corrections — and they responded in fine fashion.
In the first set, the Grizzlies fought off a set point at 24-23 to tie it on one of
Kevin Braxton's program-record 20 kills, then got another kill from
Corbin Deck two points later to close it out. Franklin never trailed in the second, scoring 11 of 12 points during one stretch to pull out to an 18-7 lead and cruising in from there.
Rockford came back to steal the extended third set before the Grizzlies responded by taking a 12-3 lead to start the fourth. Braxton and Deck each had a pair of kills during that blitz, while
Jonathan McCoy and
Leo Meseberg added service aces. Franklin led by at least seven the rest of the way, ending the match on a Meseberg kill.
In addition to Braxton's record-setting offensive performance, Franklin also set new single-match school standards in assists (
Matthew Becerra with 41) and blocks (Meseberg with nine). McCoy posted a double-double with 13 kills and 10 digs, while Becerra pulled up 11 digs,
Simon Hmung 10 and Deck nine.
Deck added seven kills and Meseberg six in the win as the Grizzlies hammered down 54 kills in all, their most ever in a match.
Taylor is hopeful that the win will give the team some momentum going forward, starting with Tuesday's road trip to Spalding.
"We talked about how we've got to do it more consistently," he said, "but really proud of the group, the effort, the energy and putting ourselves on the right path to continue growing."
