After its initial Alumnae Day plans in December were dashed by a poorly timed snowstorm, Franklin women's basketball finally got a chance to show out for its predecessors on Saturday afternoon.
The Grizzlies didn't disappoint.
Taking the court in front of several former players as well as Anita "Mama" White, the widow of former Griz coach Gene White, Franklin kept Bluffton at arm's length for most of the day en route to a 61-50 victory at the Spurlock Center.
"Our energy was great today," Franklin coach
Ashley Blanch said. "I love sharing our win with alumnae. I am glad we got it done to honor them and Gene."
The Grizzlies (16-4, 11-2 HCAC) trailed 9-6 early but jumped in front for good, 15-13, on a
Jordan Coon jumper with eight seconds left in the opening quarter.
Briley Munchel and
Kate Breeden added 3-pointers early in the second to help the team briefly stretch the lead to double digits before settling in with a 31-26 halftime edge.
Bluffton was able to get within four on several occasions in the second half, the last at 44-40 with 8:34 to go in the contest, but a three-point play from
Payton Seay capped an 8-1 burst that gave Franklin some much-needed separation at 52-41 with six minutes remaining. The margin stayed between nine and 15 points the rest of the way.
Coon scored 17 points in the victory, while Seay posted a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Munchel and Breeden added eight points apiece and
Taylor Turk scored seven.
Franklin will be back home on Wednesday evening (Feb. 4, 7 p.m.) against Mount St. Joseph. The Grizzlies lost the first meeting between the two in overtime, 77-76, back on Dec. 16.
