Men's Basketball Scores Road Win at Transy

The best way to bounce back from a disappointing road loss is to pick up a big victory during your next bus trip.

LeBron Bennie-Powell erupted for 26 points in 23 minutes off the bench, helping supplement a strong defensive showing as Franklin men's basketball earned a 75-66 triumph at Transylvania on Wednesday night.

"I could not be more proud for the grit and resilience of this team," Griz coach Chris Hamilton said. "There's tons of individual praise that could go around, but the collective effort to defend the way we did for 40 minutes was special to see."

The Grizzlies (9-6, 5-3 HCAC) led 24-23 at the end of a back-and-forth first half after a Dylan Beverly bucket in the closing seconds, but the Pioneers scored the first four points of the second half to reclaim the lead. Bennie-Powell then hit a 3-pointer to tie the game, and two more 3s from Cooper Matthews and Bennie-Powell put the visitors ahead 33-29 with 16:40 remaining in the contest.

The score was deadlocked at 52-52 before Beverly fed Matthews for consecutive baskets, the second of those a 3-pointer, to give Franklin the lead for good with 4:44 on the clock. After the Pioneers got back within a pair, Beverly knocked down a 3 and Bennie-Powell made four straight free throws to stretch the Griz advantage to 64-55. Transy got no closer than five the rest of the way.

Bennie-Powell got his points in efficient fashion, taking just nine shots from the floor and making six of them. He made four of his five 3-point tries and was 10 of 13 from the foul line.

The Grizzly attack was well balanced behind him. Braylon Russell had 11 points, followed by nine apiece from Beverly and Justin Harrington. Matthews finished with eight points, while Connor McNabb scored six and pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds, leading the way to a 44-34 advantage on the glass overall.

Franklin will be back in the friendly confines of the Spurlock Center on Saturday afternoon (Jan. 17, 1 p.m.) for an Alumni Day matchup with HCAC co-leader Rose-Hulman to wrap up the first half of the league schedule.
