Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Ryan O'Leary, Sports Information Director

Men's Soccer Drops Home Opener to Flying Dutchmen

Franklin men's soccer coach Josh Hughes had said prior to Monday that Hope was probably the best team on the schedule this season.

The Flying Dutchmen certainly looked the part, swarming the Grizzlies from the outset and rolling to a 10-0 win at Faught Stadium.

"They didn't do anything that we didn't see on film," Hughes said of Hope, a team that advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament a year ago. "We talked about it. But we didn't show up today. We can make excuses — you know, second game in three days and not enough time to prepare, whatever you want to say. But we weren't up to it today, and I think we got exactly what we deserved.

"It's a good lesson for us. That's the level we're trying to; now guys know we're well off it."

Hope (2-3) got on the board with a Ryker Corstange goal in the 12th minute, but the floodgates really started to open midway through the first half. Goals by Benjamin Smitley, Micah Wieland and Jackson Mindling — the first of his three on the day — all came within a span of three and a half minutes and quickly stretched the Flying Dutchmen lead to 5-0 with 8:51 to go in the half. Mindling's second tally, which came in the 43rd minute, gave the visitors a 6-0 halftime cushion.

Mindling and Seth Walters scored 2:26 apart to make it 8-0 with 31:22 remaining; Wieland scored in the 75th minute and assisted on a Josh Reyes goal in the 79th to finish off the scoring.

"They're good," Hughes said, "but we also let them do whatever they wanted today. Lots of teams would have looked good against us today."

The Grizzlies were outshot by a 28-2 margin overall. Starting goalkeeper Jaime Silva made eight first-half saves before giving way to Easton Terry (three saves) after the intermission.

Franklin (0-4) returns to the Faught Stadium pitch Wednesday evening for a match against Asbury at 6:15 p.m., just after the Griz women host Alma.
