Two out of three — make that four out of five — ain't bad at all.
Franklin women's volleyball finished up a 4-1 weekend at its own invitational with a pair of four-set victories on Saturday at the Spurlock Center. The Grizzlies nearly made it a perfect 5 for 5 in tourney play but dropped their middle match on the day, an 18-25, 26-24, 25-19, 22-25, 15-13 heartbreaker against Trine.
Now 9-8, the Grizzlies have already matched last season's win total.
"We talked about it — are we going to flip the switch?" Franklin coach
Dillon Taylor said. "Whenever we decide to flip the switch, we start winning."
The day started with Franklin giving its younger players some run in a 26-24, 25-14, 23-25, 25-18 win over Kuyper.
Arabella Shepherd (13 kills, three aces, nine digs),
Kammi Sparks (seven kills) and
Tayler Anderson (11 digs, three aces) impressed Taylor during some of their first extended action of the season.
Anna Kute and
Rylie Ebert added nine kills apiece.
Against Trine, the Grizzlies fell behind two sets to one but fought back valiantly with a win in the fourth. A pair of
Campbell Clark service aces helped pave the way to an 11-4 lead, and late kills from
Leah Middleton and
Hope Moring helped fend off a late Thunder charge. In the fifth set, Franklin erased an early 5-1 deficit and briefly led 11-10 before Trine got the last two points to break a 13-13 tie.
Moring had 13 kills, 20 assists, eight digs and six aces in defeat, while Schroeder and
Kaitlyn Lavy added 12 kills each. Clark led the back row with 25 digs.
"We've been talking all week about how the margins are razor-thin, and it shows," Taylor said. "One ace can make the difference in that match.
The Grizzlies finished the weekend in style against Kalamazoo with a thrilling 25-22, 21-25, 26-24, 26-24 triumph, avenging a similarly close match in tournament play a week ago.
In the third set, Franklin trailed 18-15 before consecutive kills by
Kaitlyn Lowes,
Mireily Colomba and
McKenzie Schroeder tied the score. Kalamazoo fought off three set points to tie it again at 24-24 but errors gave the next two points to the home team. The fourth set saw the Grizzlies get five points in a row, two on Schroeder kills, to pull ahead 17-13. After the Hornets pushed back to take a 24-23 lead, Franklin finished out the final three points of the match — the last on a thunderous Schroeder kill that reverberated throughout the gymnasium and set off a raucous celebration.
Facing a couple of do-or-die moments in that match, Taylor's team showed him what it's made of.
"In that moment, I saw a different look in my group and they said, 'No, we're going.' And you saw it."
Moring and Schroeder were voted to the all-tournament team by the opposing coaches.
Franklin has a week to enjoy its recent success before a road trip to Millikin next Saturday (Sept. 27).
Schroeder and Moring had 14 kills each for the Griz, with Moring adding 23 assists and 10 digs for a triple-double. Lowes finished with a career-high 13 kills,
Brionna Linkel had 26 assists and
Charlotte Goto pulled up 19 digs.
