FRANKLIN – For the first time in program history, the Franklin women's lacrosse team saw a match go all the way into double overtime. And with their three captains putting in massive shifts, the Grizzlies were able to collect their first win of the season on Monday (Apr. 14) afternoon.
Sophomore captain
Abby Moore scored the tying goal with less than 10 seconds to play in regulation and fellow captain
Addie Whitman buried the game-winner 30 seconds into double overtime and the Grizzlies (1-6) beat Division II Ursuline (1-11) 11-10.
How it Happened
Down by two less than two minutes into the game, the Grizzlies came alive with three goals over the final 2:23 of the opening period with Whitman scoring twice and Moore netting once. Down 4-3 after one quarter, Franklin got even with an
Aubrey Small goal 77 seconds into the second period, kicking off a frame that saw the Grizzlies out-score the Arrows 6-0 to take a 9-4 lead into the break.
The halftime break proved to be just what the Arrows needed, as Ursuline kept Franklin off the board for the majority of the second half, and took a 10-9 lead with 6:14 to go in the game. With time winding down in the fourth, Franklin was presented with a golden chance to tie the game when Moore was awarded a free position shot with nine seconds to play.
The sophomore midfielder broke in from a bad angle and lofted a shot just inside the far post to even things up and guarantee extra lacrosse.
Ursuline nearly ended the game 33 seconds into the first overtime with a free position shot of their own, but
Catherine Scott shut down what would be the only shot on goal in the first overtime. Whitman controlled the opening draw in double overtime and brought the game to a close, slicing through the Ursuline defense and beating the goalkeeper low just 30 ticks into the period.
