TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Franklin College baseball team hit the road on Sunday (Apr. 13) afternoon for two games with the Rose-Hulman Engineers.
The Grizzlies (14-15, 6-8 HCAC) suffered a pair of setbacks to the Engineers (15-12, 8-6 HCAC), dropping game one 19-15 and game two 8-5.
Game One: Rose-Hulman 19 – Franklin 15
Facing a 7-1 deficit through two innings, Franklin rallied for seven runs in their half of the third to take the lead with a three-run triple from
Josh Girvan highlighting the big inning. Rose went on to score the next five runs and hold a 12-8 lead through five innings. Franklin got one back in the fifth on an RBI single from
Andrew Wallace and score four in the seventh with a two-run blast from
Garrett DeHart and a two-run single by
Alex Billman putting Franklin back in front, 13-12.
Down 14-13 after seven innings, Franklin took the lead again with Girvan scoring on a wild pitch and DeHart clubbing a solo home run to flip the lead to 15-14 Grizzlies. But Franklin was done in by a five-run eighth from the Engineers, their third five-run inning of the game.
DeHart went 3-for-4 with three RBI and three runs scored. Girvan,
Nic Deering and
Brady Redman all had two hits apiece for Franklin while Girvan swiped three more bases a day after setting the program's single-season record for steals.
Game Two: Rose-Hulman 8 – Franklin 5
Girvan opened the scoring in game two by stealing home in the top of the first. Franklin made it a 3-1 game in their half of the third, with Wallace and Redman each driving in runs with singles.
Girvan brought the Grizzlies even in the sixth with an RBI single to tie the game at 4-4. But Rose would score the game's next four runs with Franklin only managing a run scoring on a double play in their half of the ninth.
DeHart, Wallace and Girvan all recorded two hits in the game with
Ian Nuckles scoring twice for the Grizzlies.
Gavin Leavy tossed five innings of four-hit ball in his second career start, with
Brayton Belcher (1-2) and
Damian Tillie working out of the bullpen.
