ADRIAN, Mich. – The Franklin softball team headed north on Tuesday (Apr. 1) to face off with the Adrian Bulldogs in a non-conference double-header.
The teams resumed their game that was called off in Kentucky earlier this season, with Franklin (8-5) taking the opener by a 5-1 score. The Grizzlies finished off the sweep in impressive fashion in game two, grabbing a 7-4 victory from the Bulldogs (12-8).
Game One: Franklin 5 – Adrian 1
Zoey Kugelman opened up the scoring in the bottom of the first, ripping an RBI double to right field and scoring
Hadley Fuhrman for the early 1-0 lead. The Bulldogs equalized in the top of the fourth, but
Eriana Wagner put Franklin in front for good when she launched a two-run home run in the fifth to make it a 3-1 game. Franklin got insurance runs later in the fifth thanks to a bases loaded walk drawn by
Kendall Lowry and
Ruth Kaiser's sac fly to stretch the lead to 5-1.
That proved to be more than enough run support for
Lauren Duncan (4-3), with the sophomore pitcher allowing one run on hive hits with no walks and three strikeouts. Kugelman and Kaiser each finished with two hits at the plate to pace the offense.
Game Two: Franklin 7 – Adrian 4
A big second inning put the Grizzlies on course to claim game number two, with Franklin plating six runs in their half of the inning. Fuhrman, Kugelman and
Karrsen Pruitt each recorded two-run singles in the inning, staking Franklin to a lead they would hold the rest of the game.
Kugelman continued her big day at the plate with an RBI double in the fourth inning, and the freshman finished 3-for-4 with a run scored and three RBI in total. Kugelman (3-2) was also the game two starter in the circle, scattering five hits and walking three over six innings of work before turning things over to
Kamzi Gross for the final inning.
