RECAP | Baseball Drops Two Close Matchups with Webster

SAUGET, Ill. – The Franklin College baseball team headed west on Tuesday (Apr. 1) afternoon for a pair of non-conference matchups with the Webster Gorloks.

The Grizzlies (12-10) came up short in both ends of the double-header, falling 10-7 in game one a 3-0 in a seven-inning game number two.

Game One: Webster 10 – Franklin 7
Franklin got the early jump in the opener courtesy of Garrett DeHart, with the junior crushing a two-run home run in the first for an early Franklin lead. But the hosts grabbed command with a four-run first and tacked on two more runs in the second for an early 6-2 Webster lead.

Franklin got back within a run with a two-run third and they added another in the fourth on an RBI ground out from Josh Girvan to cut the Webster lead to 6-5. The Gorloks answered with two more runs in the bottom of the fourth but Franklin got those runs back in the sixth with a Girvan sac fly and DeHart RBI single getting the Grizzlies within a run at 8-7.

But that was as close as Franklin would get, with Webster plating insurance runs in the seventh and eighth frames, respectively, while keeping the Grizzlies off the board.

DeHart turned in a huge game at the plate, going 3-for-5 with four RBI and two runs scored. Brayton Belcher (1-1) made the first start of his Franklin career while Jordan DeAtley worked a season-high 5.1 innings out of the bullpen.

Game Two: Webster 3 – Franklin 0 (7 inn.)
Both pitching staffs turned in stingy outings in the second matchup, with the game's only runs coming with two Webster runs in the third and one more in the fourth. Franklin put runners in scoring position in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings, but left those runners on the basepaths to close out each frame.

Nic Deering went 2-for-2 at the dish while Girvan, DeHart and Kam Seitz all reached with base hits. Gavin Leavy (1-1) made the first start of his Franklin career, giving up four hits and striking out four over four innings of work.
