INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Franklin baseball team hosted the Albion Britons for a double header on Sunday (Mar. 16) at Bishop Chatard High School.
After having a late-inning comeback come up just short in the opener in a 17-15 loss, the Grizzlies (7-4) came away with a split after besting the Britons (3-8) by a 7-2 score in game two.
Game One: Albion 17 – Franklin 15
Franklin took their first lead of the day in the bottom of the third, with a run scoring on a
Dyllan Redmon ground out and
Alex Billman scooting home on a wild pitch to make it a 2-1 game. Billman scored a second time in the bottom of the fifth, stealing home to cut the Britons' lead to 4-3 through five innings.
Albion put together a big sixth inning to blow the game open and held on to win the game despite a seven-run ninth inning from the Grizzlies that saw the hosts bring the tying run to the plate with two outs.
Andrew Wallace and
Luke Willmann each drove in three runs. Four different Grizzlies recorded multile hits in the game in Willmann,
Josh Girvan,
Daniel Cross, and
Ian Nuckles.
Matthew Johnson (1-1) got the start, allowing three earned runs with two walks and three strikeouts over 4.2 innings.
Game Two: Franklin 7 – Albion 2
Franklin took the early lead thanks to an RBI fielder's choice from Wallace. Albion tied the game in their half of the fifth, but a sac fly from Willmann in the bottom of the inning restored Franklin's lead at 2-1.
The seventh inning saw Franklin put the game out of reach, with the big blow coming in the form of a three-run triple from Nuckles that highlighted a five-run frame and made it a 7-1 game.
Girvan went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and Nuckles went 2-for-3 at the dish.
Cameron Manuel (1-0) collected the first win of his career, hurling six innings of two-hit ball with two strikeouts.
Will Butts earned his first save of the season after allowing one unearned run over the final three innings.
