RECAP | Grizzlies Drop Two to Maroons on Friday Afternoon

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Franklin baseball made the trip to Bishop Chatard High School on Friday (Feb. 28) afternoon for a pair of games with the University of Chicago Maroons.

The Grizzlies (2-2) were struck by defensive struggles in both games, with the Maroons (8-2) earning a sweep by scores of 16-11 and 19-2.

Game One: UChicago 16 – Franklin 11
Franklin used the long ball to plate 10 early runs, slugging four round-trippers in the opening three innings. Garrett DeHart and Andrew Wallace both went deep in the first inning and were followed by a three-run homer from Dyllan Redmon in the second and another three-run blast from Jordan DeAtley in the third, giving the hosts a 10-2 lead through three frames.

Wallace smacked his second solo homer of the game in the bottom of the seventh and Franklin took an 11-5 lead into the eighth. But disaster struck as back-to-back errors with two outs in the top of the eighth sparked an eight-run from the Maroons, who would add four more runs in the ninth to finish the comeback.

Wallace wet 3-for-4 with three runs scored to go with his three RBI. Redmon had two hits and scored twice in the game. Colin Goley drove in the first run of his Franklin career with a sac fly in the third inning.

Matthew Johnson turned in six strong innings on the bump, giving up four runs on seven hits with eight strikeouts on 98 pitches.

Game Two: UChicago 19 – Franklin 2
Errors plagues the Grizzlies in the first inning of game two, with five mistakes leading to a big first inning from the Maroons. The Grizzlies got runs thanks to a sac fly from Ian Nuckles in the second and a solo home run from Garrett DeHart in the fourth, but the Griz could only manage three hits in the night cap.

A whole host of Grizzlies made their career debut in game two with Brayton Belcher, Gavin Leavy, Cameron Manuel, Collin Beaty, Nic Deering, Brady Redman, Ian Provenzano and Kam Seitz all earning the first playing time of their time in the blue and gold.
