Now
that's how you finish off a rivalry game.
Briley Munchel's 3-pointer with half a second left gave Franklin women's basketball a stunning 67-65 triumph at Hanover on Saturday afternoon in a game that the Grizzlies trailed almost all the way through.
The visiting Griz (5-2, 2-0 HCAC) were behind by double digits on multiple occasions in the first half and still trailed by nine, 61-52, with 5:49 left in the fourth quarter. But two layups by
Molly Schulte, the second with a free throw tacked on, and a 3 from
Jordan Coon made it a 63-60 game with 3:58 to go.
A post basket by
Payton Seay at the 1:47 mark got Franklin within a point at 65-64, but the Grizzlies failed to cash in on a pair of forced turnovers over the next minute. A third defensive stop, though, ended with a Coon rebound and a timeout with 22 seconds remaining.
Seay got the ball in the paint and was surrounded as the clock ticked inside of 10 seconds. She kicked the ball out to Munchel, who in turn fed Coon in the left corner. When Coon's baseline move was cut off, she sent the ball back out to the left wing to Munchel, who calmly drained a 3-ball to give Franklin its only lead of the night — and a massive league win.
"We played Franklin College women's basketball in the second half," Griz coach
Ashley Blanch said. "We played with confidence and grit."
Coon led a balanced Grizzly lineup with 13 points, while Schulte and Seay scored nine apiece.
Kate Breeden finished with eight points,
Taylor Turk had seven and Munchel — who had missed five of her six shots before her game-winner — added six points and eight assists.
Franklin will host Berea this coming Saturday afternoon (Dec. 13) on its Alumnae Day.
