The iron was all sorts of unkind to Franklin men's basketball on Tuesday.
Knocking down just 28% of their shots from the field, including an ice-cold 7 of 31 (22.58%) in the second half, the Grizzlies were unable to take advantage of a solid defensive effort, suffering a 60-51 setback against Oswego State in their final game at the Music City Classic in Nashville, Tennessee.
Franklin (6-5) clawed out of an early 10-2 hole, stringing together eight consecutive points to tie the game at 26-26 late in the first half. Back-to-back 3s from
LeBron Bennie-Powell and
David Streitmatter capped that burst. The Lakers, though, rebuilt a four-point edge going into halftime and never relinquished the upper hand.
Oswego State scored the first seven points of the second half to stretch its lead to 39-28. The Grizzlies eventually got as close as 55-51 on a
Ledger Gelfius 3 with 2:02 left in the game and followed with a defensive stop, but they were unable to cash in on the extra possession and the Lakers put the game on ice.
Getting shots to drop was even more difficult for the Griz from long range; the team connected on just six of its 29 3-point tries. That made it difficult to take advantage of Oswego State's offensive struggles at the other end. The Lakers shot just 37.5% from the floor while committing 20 turnovers and missing eight of 21 free throws.
Cooper Matthews was the lone Grizzly to score in double figures, finishing with 12 points. Bennie-Powell and
Rohan Pearson each added seven.
Franklin returns to action this Saturday afternoon (Jan. 3, 3 p.m.) when it hosts Earlham as part of a women's/men's doubleheader at the Spurlock Center.
