Men's Basketball Outlasts Berea in Overtime Triumph

12/13/2025 8:07:00 PM

Box Score The last time Berea men's basketball visited the Spurlock Center, it took host Franklin to overtime before the Grizzlies prevailed in overtime.

On Saturday afternoon, the two HCAC rivals delivered a pretty faithful reboot. Again, it was Franklin that came out on the winning end, with a surge in extra time allowing the home team to come away with an 83-74 victory.

The Grizzlies (4-4, 1-2) took the lead for good at 71-69 when Avery Saunders opened the extra period with a layup. The Mountaineers were still within a possession at 73-70 when Jesse Faires fed Saunders down low for a dunk with 3:04 on the clock. After Berea again got within three at 77-74, Zaryen Moore drilled a 3-pointer at the 1:31 mark to help seal the deal. The Grizzlies tacked on three free throws in the final minute.

In a game that featured 12 ties and eight lead changes in regulation, Franklin trailed 67-62 with 4:08 left in regulation before creeping back into it. Cooper Matthews fed Justin Harrington for an open 3 that cut the deficit to a pair, then came up with a steal and a layup to tie the score with 3:06 to go. Saunders gave the Griz the lead on two free throws with 2:07 on the clock before the Mountaineers scooped up a pair of points at the foul line down the stretch to force OT.

Berea broke a 27-27 tie late in the first half by scoring nine points in a row, but Franklin was able to slow that momentum going into the break, with two free throws and a last-second layup by Harrington making it 36-31.

Harrington scored 21 points off the bench to top the Grizzlies, with Matthews (18 points) and Saunders (16 points, 10 rebounds) close behind. Ledger Gelfius chipped in with nine points and Moore eight.

Franklin will be back at home on Wednesday (Dec. 17) night when it faces Mount St. Joseph.
