The bad news for Franklin women's volleyball is that it concluded the regular season with a 25-19, 25-20, 25-10 loss at Transylvania on Saturday afternoon.
The good news? The season isn't over.
Having long ago sealed up a spot in the HCAC tournament, the Grizzlies will have the opportunity to venture back to Kentucky on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. quarterfinal matchup against the second-seeded Pioneers.
Just one year removed from an 0-9 conference mark, Franklin (15-14, 4-5) has plenty to celebrate.
"Really proud of this group for so many reasons," Griz coach
Dillon Taylor said. "Achieving a winning regular season and making the conference tournament. No athlete in our program could say that until this year, so that was a huge accomplishment. This group of seniors has been instrumental, so I'm happy they get that shot to play at least one more match together."
The Grizzlies were down 18-8 in the first set before scoring five straight points and seven of eight to cut the deficit to 19-15.
Leah Middleton keyed that spurt with three kills. In the second, Franklin got as close as 16-14 and later fought off a set point with a
Hope Moring kill that made it 24-20, but it was unable to pull ahead in either.
"For two sets again today, we put up a real fight against a top team in the conference," Taylor said. "I was very proud of our pin attackers today. They were fearless and really held to what we wanted from them, and continue to pursue great quality swings. We need to find our middles more, but that's all right. We get another opportunity at them."
Senior
Kaitlyn Lavy led the Grizzlies with 11 kills, followed by Middleton with eight and
Kaitlyn Lowes with six. Moring posted a double-double with 10 assists and a team-high 12 digs, while
Campbell Clark pulled up 11 digs.
