Just 24 hours after using a spirited late-game run to beat Olivet on opening night, Franklin men's basketball needed to find similar magic to offset a second-half run from visiting Hope.
The Grizzlies came through once again, closing the game on an 18-3 run after the Flying Dutchmen had erased a double-digit deficit and putting away a 73-58 victory.
"It's definitely a credit to the players, overcoming some bad coaching," Griz coach
Chris Hamilton said. "In the second half, I was not doing a great job putting them in a position to be successful, but they did a great job of staying the course. Even when the lead was trimmed, we talked about stop looking at the score. We know better than anybody that we can come back on somebody ... we need to treat each possession like that when we have the lead as well."
Franklin (2-0) had a seemingly comfortable 43-28 lead after a
Cooper Matthews layup early in the second half, but the visitors turned up the heat and chipped away, eventually tying the score at 55-55 with 5:33 remaining.
Seeing their cushion whittled away to nothing, though, the Grizzlies flipped a switch. They took the lead on two
Justin Harrington free throws and then added a flurry of three straight layups by
Dylan Beverly,
Zaryen Moore and Harrington to grab a 63=56 advantage at the 2:31 mark. Hope got a bucket to cut it to five before a gaggle of free throws and back-to-back Matthews layups helped put it away.
The Grizzlies faced an early 10-7 hole but used an extended run to get out in front 24-14, a lead that held until the Flying Dutchmen made their big second-half push.
Harrington had 16 points and Beverly 15 for Franklin, leading a balanced attack that saw five other players score between six and eight points.
LeBron Bennie-Powell and
Avery Saunders each grabbed seven rebounds, and Beverly blocked three shots for the second straight game. Paced by Harrington and Beverly, the Grizzlies totaled 45 bench points to Hope's 13.
"Our bench point differential has been superb," Hamilton said. "That's the next-man-up mentality, guys not caring who gets the credit. ... Everyone knows that when they're preparing well, they're going to have a chance to be able to compete."
After a week off, Franklin will return to action on the road next Saturday afternoon against Knox.
