Women's Basketball Demolishes Cougars In Opener

As debuts go, Ashley Blanch couldn't have asked for a much better one in her first game at the helm.

Franklin women's basketball dominated from start to finish, helping Blanch open her tenure with an 85-26 rout of Concordia Chicago at the Spurlock Center on Friday evening.

"We put everything together that we've been working on, which is super positive," Blanch said. "We didn't have to get on them as much with certain details; they took care of the little details, which is important. The little details are the big things, and that's what we're telling our girls."

The Grizzlies took the lead for good at 13-2 with an 11-0 run over the first half of the opening quarter. Payton Seay converted a pair of buckets during that spurt, with Kate Breeden adding a 3-pointer. The margin swelled to 23-10 by the end of the period and all the way to 48-17 by halftime.

With the game well in hand, Blanch was able to get deep into her bench during the second half. Thirteen different players got into the scoring column, with 17 seeing action overall.

"It's amazing to get everybody in, and everybody get to see their hard work pay off," the coach said. "I want to play as many people as we can, so hopefully that's going to keep people excited and get people to keep working in practice."

Erica Buening paced a balanced Griz lineup with 15 points and six rebounds, adding three steals; Seay and Molly Schulte added 14 points apiece, and Briley Munchel posted team highs of nine assists and four steals.

Franklin forced 26 turnovers, 17 of those via steal, and outrebounded the Cougars 34-20.

Concordia shot a frigid 1 of 33 from 3-point range, something Blanch knows her team can't count on happening regularly.

"If they were to make even a third of their shots, it could have been a game," she said. "So we definitely need to work a little bit on that, piecing some things together, saw a lot of big-picture things that were right."

Next up for Franklin is a road trip to Capital next Tuesday (Nov. 11).
