Franklin men's basketball scored enough points and forced enough turnovers to get a win at rival DePauw on Saturday afternoon, but the host Tigers shot well enough to take advantage of the opportunities they had.
Converting from the field at better than 52% and outrebounding the visitors by a 40-25 — grabbing a dozen offensive boards — DePauw held on for an 86-79 win over a Griz team that created 23 takeaways.
The Grizzlies fell into an early 13-5 hole but climbed out, pulling ahead 21-18 on a 3-pointer and a paint bucket by
Jesse Faires. The Tigers, though, reeled off nine consecutive points to go back in front, 36-30, with 4:28 remaining in the half and still led by half a dozen at the intermission, 47-41.
Trailing by as many as 15 in the second half, Franklin put together a 12-2 surge to get as close as five, 80-75. with 4:02 left in the game. Faires had six points and a pair of steals on the back end of that run.
Faires finished with 17 points, leading five Grizzlies in double figures, and added four of the team's 16 steals.
Justin Harrington scored 14 points in his first start of the season,
Braylon Russell added 11 and
Dylan Beverly and
Cooper Matthews contributed 10 points each.
Franklin (3-2) will have Thanksgiving weekend off before returning to action at Anderson on Dec. 3.
