Both times that Franklin football has dropped a conference game this fall, the response has been emphatic.
On Saturday afternoon, the Grizzlies left little room for doubt in a 41-7 rout of Anderson at the Ravens' temporary home, Lapel High School.
The Grizzlies (4-4, 2-2 HCAC) got three touchdown runs from senior
Trevor Winkles and three TD passes from
Marshall Kmiecik, two of those going to
Jordan Fonda. Franklin finished with a cavernous 512-87 advantage in total offense.
"I was just really curious to see how our guys would respond after coming off a tough loss, having gotten banged up pretty good a week ago," Franklin coach
Mike Leonard said. "Was very pleased the way we came out and scored six touchdowns with no turnovers, while playing very solid defense the entire day."
Fonda scored the first Franklin points, pulling in a 15-yard pass from Kmiecik just over four minutes into the action, and a 2-yard Winkles run stretched the lead to 14-0 through one quarter. Anderson answered with a touchdown drive early in the second period, but the Griz defense tightened from there, not allowing another point.
Meanwhile, the Franklin offense piled on. Kmiecik and Fonda connected again for a 10-yard score, and a 2-yard touchdown run by Winkles with 45 seconds left in the half gave the Grizzlies a 27-7 cushion.
The visitors added two more TDs in the third period, with Winkles scoring from a yard out and Kmiecik tossing a 13-yarder to
Deundre Kirby.
Winkles gained a career-high 114 yards on 14 carries for the Grizzlies. Kmiecik completed 24 of 34 passes for exactly 300 yards, with Fonda (five catches, 83 yards his top target).
Haden Durnil made seven tackles for the Franklin defense, which totaled 12 tackles for loss and six quarterback sacks.
Carter Edney intercepted a pass and the Grizzlies broke up three more throws, limiting Anderson to 80 yards through the air on 10-of-26 passing. The Ravens gained just seven yards on the ground.
"We have several things to clean up, most notably in the area of certain special teams," Leonard said. "But overall, very pleased with the attitude and effort of this football team."
Franklin returns to Faught Stadium next Saturday (Nov. 8) for its final home game of the season against Bluffton.
