Earlier this season, Franklin women's soccer had a match at Knox in which it dominated on the field and on the stat sheet but couldn't seal the deal with a goal.
For almost 85 scoreless minutes on Wednesday afternoon, the Grizzlies had to wonder if they were doomed to a similar fate at Manchester — but then,
Jetta Norris came through.
The senior found the net from the left side with 4:55 remaining in the match to lift her side to a 1-0 victory, Franklin's first win since Sept. 6.
"Just really proud of the team for keeping with it and pushing until the end," Franklin coach Jen Jackson said. "We had a lot of chances and were struggling to put one away, and that type of performance can be frustrating — but they stuck with it and finally got the reward."
The Grizzlies (2-10-1, 1-4 HCAC) were on the attack from the outset, getting shots on goal from
Meghan Moses,
Issy Pridemore and
Sydney Lovett within the first three minutes and another from Lovett just before the 20-minute mark, but Manchester goalkeeper Reagan Claus was up to the task, stopping all four attempts. Franklin finished the first half with a 6-0 advantage in shots, putting five of those on frame, but had nothing to show for their efforts.
Claus made two more stops in the 54th and 56th minutes on shots by Moses and
Madison Hill before the well ran dry for much of the second half. It wasn't until the 85th minute that the Grizzlies put another shot on goal, with Claus turning away Hill, but Norris was able to convert what proved to be the game-winner less than a minute later.
Grace Williams had two saves for Franklin to earn her first career shutout.
"They have been working really hard," Jackson said of her team, "so it's great to see that pay off."
Franklin will be back on the road Sunday afternoon against Bluffton.
