SEWANEE, Tenn. – The Franklin women's basketball team stepped out of conference play on Sunday (Dec. 29) afternoon for day one of the Sewanee Classic and a meeting with the host Tigers of The University of the South.
Franklin (8-2) made it four wins on the bounce, thanks to a 27-point outing from
Jordan Coon and a strong second half defensively to get past Sewanee (5-6) by a 71-62 score.
How it Happened
The Grizzlies came out with the game's first big run, going on a 12-2 stretch to take a 15-7 lead with just under three minutes to go in the first quarter. Sewanee would cut Franklin's lead to 17-13 after 10 minutes and fight back to take the lead late in the first half, but buckets from
Sabrina Miller and
Briley Munchel closed out the second quarter and gave Franklin a 35-32 lead at the break.
The two teams were separated by one possession for the majority of the third quarter, with a late Franklin surge to close the period giving the Grizzlies a 54-49 lead with 10 minutes to play. Franklin put the game away with an 11-2 run to open the fourth quarter, busting things open and allowing the Grizzlies to come away with a convincing win.

-Franklin's defense put on a clinic in the final 20 minutes, holding Sewanee to 30.3% (10-for-33) from the field and 1-for-9 from three.
-On the offensive end, the Grizzlies shot 48.1% (25-for-52) on the day, knocking down nine three-pointers.
-Coon lit up the Tigers from long range, burying seven threes and going 10-for-18 from the floor.
