FRANKLIN, Ind. – The Franklin volleyball team celebrated Senior Night with a dominant showing on both sides of the ball, sweeping Asbury University on Tuesday (Sept. 19) night.
Franklin (4-7) hit .219 on the night and the defense held the Eagles (5-5) to .009 on the attack to earn their first win in front of the Spurlock Center crowd this fall. Before the game, the program honored seniors
Alyssa Zemlyak,
Chloe Holder,
Sofia Helton and
Maddie Holubik and all four played a major role in Franklin's win.
How it Happened
The Grizzlies jumped out to a big lead in the first set with the net-front defense leading the charge. Seven of Franklin's first 16 points came by block and that set paved the way for Franklin to take the first set 25-14, with the Grizzlies turning back a total of eight attempts in the first set.
Game two saw the Grizzlies get off to another fast start but the Eagles would slowly start to chip away at the lead and Franklin held a 21-19 lead after three straight Asbury points. But the hosts stuffed the comeback attempt with four straight points to finish off the net, with back-to-back put-downs from
Miranda Wilson closing out a 25-19 win.
With the hosts holding a 10-8 lead in the third set, the Grizzlies put the game out of reach with a 7-2 run that opened up an insurmountable lead that ended in a 25-15 game three victory.
Wilson topped the Grizzlies with 12 kills and hit a season-best .231 in the match. Holder was efficient on the attack with seven kills on 12 attempts and she finished the night with a team-best seven blocks, rejecting five on her own.
Helton handed out 14 assists in a rotation with freshman
Brionna Linkel, with the latter leading the team with 16 assists. Zemlyak had four kills and a pair of solo blocks while Holubik recorded three digs and had 10 service attempts.
Campbell Clark led Franklin with 14 digs and three aces while
Hope Moring added 12 digs to go along with five kills.
Franklin will hit the road this weekend for their final invitational of the season, traveling to Manchester University for four games at the Spartan Invitational on Sept. 22-23. The Griz are set to meet Trine and Alma on Friday night, with their first game set for 6:00 p.m.
