RECAP | Baseball Earns Second Straight HCAC Regular Season Crown, Splits Two with Earlham on Saturday

RICHMOND, Ind. – The Franklin College baseball team set a new program first on Saturday (May 6) afternoon, earning back-to-back Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) regular season championships for the first time in program history.

The Grizzlies (28-10, 16-4 HCAC) split two games on the road at Earlham (20-16, 10-10 HCAC), dropping the first game in 10 innings 3-2 and taking the second game 11-8. With Transylvania dropping game two of their double-header at Anderson, the Grizzlies locked up their second straight league title before game two was in the books.

Game One: Earlham 3 – Franklin 2 (10 inn.)
The opening contest was controlled by the two pitching staffs, as two of the conference's top offenses were limited to just 10 hits over the course of the 10-inning game.

Earlham took the game's first lead with a two-run home run in the fifth on their first hit of the game but freshman Garrett DeHart got the Griz back to even with RBI doubles in both the sixth and eighth innings, respectively. The game stayed tied until the bottom of the 10th when the Quakers worked a bases loaded walk-off.

DeHart was the lone Grizzly to finish with multiple hits in the game. Matthew Johnson got the start and fanned six over 4.1 innings of work. Sam Peck went 3.2 innings in relief and Reed Shaffer (2-2) closed out the game on the hill.

Game Two: Franklin 11 – Earlham 8
Down 3-0 after three innings, the Grizzlies took their first lead of the afternoon with a four-run fourth. Jonathan LaGuire-Cruz and Jimmy Wolff both drove in runs and Luke Willman brought in two with a single to spot the Griz a lead. Earlham tied things up in the bottom of the inning but Franklin took the lead right back with a lead-off home run from Colby Reed in the fifth and an RBI double from Tysen Lipscomb later in the inning.

The Quakers scored three times in the fifth to take a 7-6 lead but the Grizzlies went in front for good with a four-run seventh inning. Anthony Smith, Willman and DeHart all drove in runs in the seventh and Reed added an insurance run in the eighth. Will Butts (1-1) finished things off on the mound, tossing the final four innings in relief for his first career win.
