FRANKLIN – Playing in front of a home crowd for the first time in two weeks, the Franklin softball team continued their strong start to the season with a sweep of the Saint Mary's Belles on Tuesday (Mar. 21) afternoon.
The Grizzlies (11-3) jumped on Belles (5-7) pitching early in both games, taking the lead in their first trips to the plate and holding on to win by scores of 7-2 and 8-4.
Game One: Franklin 7 – Saint Mary's 2
Molly Wallace opened the scoring in the bottom of the first, roping a two-out double into the left field corner that scored a pair of Grizzlies. One inning later, Franklin tripled their lead with a four-spot in the frame with RBI singles coming way of
Sydney Rodeghier,
Sydney Bostic and
Genesis Munoz. Bostic capped the scoring for Franklin with her second RBI single of the game in the fourth.
The Belles got both of their runs in the top of the third but went quietly at the plate the rest of the game, mustering just three hits over the final four innings of play.
Sydney Pitts (3-2) frustrated hitters all game, striking out six and scattering seven hits in a complete game effort.
Game Two: Franklin 8 – Saint Mary's 4
A throwing error led to a pair of Franklin runs in the bottom of the first and the Grizzlies doubled their lead in the second thanks to an RBI double from Rodeghier and an RBI fielder's choice from Wallace. The lead expanded with an RBI single from Bostic in the fourth, a run-scoring single from Rodeghier in the fifth followed by an RBI single from
Eriana Wagner that made it an 8-1 game.
The Belles plated three runs in their half of the sixth to get within four but their seventh inning rally dried up.
Wagner went 4-for-4 with a triple and two runs scored at the plate while Rodeghier went 2-for-4 with two RBI and three runs scored.
Stephanni Kleber (5-1) went the distance in the circle, walking two and striking out two.
Franklin gets back at it on Friday (Mar. 24) afternoon, traveling to the University of Chicago for two games with the Maroons. First pitch is set for 4:00 p.m. eastern time.
