TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Franklin men's swimming and diving team closed out their season on Saturday afternoon at the final day of the 2023 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) Championships.
The Grizzlies picked up two more gold medals and eight medals in total on the final day. Franklin closed out the event with 777 points, finishing in second place overall behind champion Rose-Hulman. Following the competition, Franklin earned two of the league's top awards for the meet. Senior
Gauge Creech was named the HCAC Diver of the Meet and head coach
Andrew Hendricks was named the HCAC Men's Coach of the Year.
The highlight of the final day came courtesy of junior
Kosmo Wojack and his dominant performance in the 200 butterfly. The Hawaii-native set new program and meet records with his time of 1:48.56, giving Wojack an NCAA 'B' cut qualifying time.
Creech was the other gold medal winner on the final day of competition after taking the top spot in one-meter diving with a total of 510.15 points, more than 100 points more than the silver medal winner.
Three Grizzlies picked up silver medals on the final day and two others earned bronze medal finishes.
Jack Burke picked up silver in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:51.21 with
Campbell Coyle taking second in the 100 free in 46.55. Freshman
Tyler Wood collected silver in the 1650 free in 16:27.53 and earned bronze in the 200 breaststroke in 2:06.28.
Vincent Fletcher rounded out the individual medalists with a bronze finish in the 100 free in 46.75.
In the weekend's final event, Burke, Coyle, Fletcher and
Logan Parker earned a runner-up finish in the 400 free relay with a time of 3:05.45
While the conference championships are done, competition for the Griz isn't done for the year. Franklin will be represented at the NCAA Diving Regional in the coming weeks by Creech and
Cameron Baker, with the dates and location announced in the coming weeks.
