NORTH MANCHESTER, Ind. – The Franklin College women's tennis team collected their first two wins of the fall season on Saturday (Sept. 17), winning a thrilling 5-4 match against conference foe Manchester and following it up with a 6-3 win over Concordia Ann Arbor in the afternoon session.
Match One: Franklin 5 – Manchester 4
Franklin took the early lead with a pair of hard-fought doubles wins that needed tie-breakers to decide.
Maecee Terhune and
Emma Back teamed up to win 8-7 (10-3) at #2 doubles and
Brenna Atchison paired with
Kinley Harmon to win 8-7 (6) in #3 doubles.
Singles play saw the bottom of the FC lineup power the team to victory, with all three singles wins coming from the 4-6 spots.
Bethany Burton made quick work of her #5 matchup 6-1, 6-1 and
Samantha Schick did likewise at #6 singles 6-0, 6-2. Terhune pushed the Griz over the finish line with a 7-5, 6-7 (3-10), 6-3 victory at the #4 position.
Match Two: Franklin 6 – Concordia Ann Arbor 3
The same two teams that earned doubles wins in match one did the same in their second match of the day. Terhune and Back won 8-1 from the second spot with Harmon and Atchison winning 8-0 at three doubles.
Back was a 6-1, 6-1 winner at #2 singles, Burton won 6-4, 6-4 at #4 singles,
Emily Walker picked up a 6-0, 6-0 win at #5 singles for her first career victory to clinch the team win. Schick grabbed her second win of the day with a 6-3, 6-2 victory from the #6 spot in the lineup.
