Box Score LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Franklin men's basketball team continued their three-game road trip on Wednesday (Jan. 29) night, heading to the Beck Center for a huge conference matchup against the Transylvania Pioneers.
Senior Borden Kennedy matched a career-high with 25 points and fellow senior Kale Morris added 21 for the Grizzlies (13-5, 9-2 HCAC), who saw their 10-game winning streak come to an end at the hands of the Pioneers (11-7, 7-4 HCAC), 95-88.
"Transy is a team that has to shoot well to win and weren't quite able to check them the way we did in the first meeting," Head coach Kerry Prather noted. "We also had a few stretches where we got a little careless with our offense. It was a good game and we got a few reminders how hard it is to win games like we had been. We're at the point in the league schedule where you can learn something each game and tonight was just that for us. We can't have strings of bad possessions and we couldn't get some stops late when we needed them."
The pace was frantic from the opening tip and both offenses put on an impressive shooting display throughout the first half. The teams exchanged bucket after bucket in the opening 10 minutes before a 12-3 Grizzly run gave the visitors their largest lead of the night at 36-27 with 4:44 to go in the opening half.
Transy would claw back to take a 46-45 lead at the break when Gabe Schmitt beat the halftime buzzer with a three. Each team put on a scintillating shooting display in the opening 20 minutes, with Franklin shooting knocking down nine threes and shooting 62.1% (18-for-29) from the floor. Transy connected on 50% (19-for-38) of their field goal attempts, knocking down five triples in the opening frame.
Franklin knocked down four of the first five field goals in the second half to re-take the lead at 55-50 four minutes into the period. The Grizzlies held on to the lead through the halfway point of the period and matched their largest lead of the night when a Matt Krause three made it 67-59 with 9:52 to play.
But the Pioneers had another answer waiting and after a four-minute stretch that saw the hosts out-score the Grizzlies 15-5, Transy held a 74-72 lead with 5:34 to go. Franklin stayed within a possession over the next five minutes, but couldn't get the go-ahead bucket in the game's final 30 seconds, and the Pioneers responded by closing things out at the free throw line.
All five starters finished in double figures with Sam Gutierrez (13 pts), Payton Mills (12 pts) and Krause (11 pts) joining Kennedy and Morris. The Grizzlies shot 53.6% (37-for-69) from the floor, knockind down 12 three-pointers on the night.
Mills led all players with nine rebounds as Franklin finished with a 38-32 advantage on the glass. Kennedy, Krause and Gutierrez all pulled down seven boards each.
The Grizzlies will look to start a new winning streak on Saturday (Feb. 1), when they wrap up their road trip in Ohio against the Bluffton Beavers. Tip-off is set for 4:00 p.m.
