RECAP | Defense Wreaks Havoc on Ravens as Grizzlies get Back in Win Column

Box Score

ANDERSON, Ind. – The Franklin women's basketball team closed out a five-game road trip in impressive fashion, picking up a 68-62 win over the Anderson Ravens for their second road conference win of the year.

The Grizzlies (8-4, 4-2 HCAC) used a big third quarter to open up a sizeable lead on the Ravens (5-8, 1-5 HCAC) and roll to victory. Franklin forced 27 Anderson turnovers that turned into 24 points at the other end, marking the seventh straight game the Grizzlies have recorded at least 25 takeaways.

Franklin's defense wasted no time causing chaos for the hosts, forcing seven turnovers in the opening quarter and holding the Ravens to just one field goal in the game's opening six minutes to take a 9-3 lead. Anderson would find their footing on offense before the end of the quarter, going on an 8-1 run to take their first lead of the afternoon, but a Jessica Nix layup late in the period staked the guests to a 12-11 lead after 10 minutes.

Both teams put on an efficient showing in the second quarter with each side connecting on at least two-thirds of their shot attempts. The Grizzlies went 9-for-12 in the period and took a 34-29 lead into the half following six straight points to close out the period.

The game's deciding stretch came in the first six minutes of the second half, with Franklin rattling off a 14-3 run to take their largest lead of the day at 48-32 with 4:12 to go in the third quarter. The Grizzlies took a 56-44 lead into the final period after out-scoring the Ravens 22-15 and forcing 10 turnovers in the third frame.

A Bayleigh Walker jumper with 6:54 to play helped Franklin re-claim their largest lead of the day at 62-46. Anderson mounted a rally to close the gap late, but it proved to be too little, too late for the hosts.

Walker led all players with 18 points, going 7-for-12 from the floor while grabbed four rebounds and earning four steals. Nix provided 13 points and team-high seven rebounds off the bench for a Grizzly squad that shot 44.8% (26-for-58) from the floor.

Rebounds were 31-25 in Franklin's favor with the Grizzlies grabbing 14 offensive boards. Senior Taylor McDaniel finished with a game-high six steals while Jenna Cowart had a team-high four assists.

The Grizzlies return to action at home on Wednesday (Jan. 15) night, hosting Mount St. Joseph in the first of two meetings between league rivals. Tip-off from the Spurlock Center is set for 7:30 p.m.
