Griz Lose Hard-Fought Championship Match to Hanover

Box Score

Franklin, Ind. - The Franklin College women's soccer team lost a hard-fought 1-0 match to Hanover College in the 2016 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) tournament championship match on Saturday afternoon at Faught Stadium.

The Panthers scored on a free kick by Abby Shroyer in the 40th minute. The scoring opportunity came from the middle of the pitch, just outside the 18-yard box.

Franklin (16-4), the tournament's No. 1 seed, struck the crossbar and left post in an attempt to score an equalizing goal.

No. 2 seed Hanover (13-5) attempted 13 shots, compared to Franklin's 12 shots over 90 minutes of action. The Grizzlies held a 6-4 edge in shots during the second half.

Sophomore Maddie Fleet had a team-high four shots, while junior Clare Lenart and freshman Taylor McDaniel each added two shots.

Franklin's 16 victories tie a single-season school record from the 2015 campaign. The Grizzlies have reached the HCAC's tournament championship match each of the last three seasons.

The team is still eligible to receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III tournament. Selections will be announced on Monday, November 7 at 1:30 p.m.
