Box Score Franklin, Ind. - The Franklin College men's soccer team battled to a 2-2 draw on Sunday at Faught Stadium against the Concordia University Chicago in the final non-conference contest of the 2015 season.
The Grizzlies (3-5-1) got off to a fast start with a goal seven minutes into the contest. Sophomore Cam Mattern (Pittsboro, Ind./Brownsburg) buried a shot from 10 yards out off a free kick by senior Austin Fundenberger (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central).
Franklin took a 2-0 lead in the 35th minute on a goal by freshman Blaine Fuhs (Washington, Ind./Washington Catholic). Fuhs leads the team with three goals scored this season.
However, Concordia Chicago (4-4-1) scored twice in the first 12 minutes of the second half to square the match. Joey Malme tallied both goals 34 seconds into the period and in the 57th minute.
In the overtime periods, the hosts hit the crossbar twice. Senior Bryce Wellin (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) struck the crossbar during the first 10-minute overtime session. Later, senior Thaddeus Broderick (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) hit the crossbar off a corner kick by Fundenberger.
Franklin recorded six of its 18 shots in the two overtimes. The team held the visitors to three shots in overtime. Fuhs led the Grizzlies with five shots, while Fundenberger added four shots. Wellin and Broderick each attempted two shots in the match.
Franklin opens Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play on Friday, October 2, at 8 p.m. when it travels Mount St. Joseph University in Cincinnati, Ohio.
