Volleyball Splits Two Matches on First Day of Rose-Hulman Invitational

Terre Haute, Ind. - The Franklin College volleyball team defeated Capital University in four sets to split a pair of matches in the first day of the Rose-Hulman Invitational on Saturday.

The Grizzlies lost the opening set 25-23 before rebounding with 25-20 and 25-19 set victories to hold a 2-1 set lead in the match. Franklin sealed the victory with a 25-17 triumph in the fourth set.

Earlier in the day, the team lost a hard-fought five-set match to Muskingum University (25-20, 24-26, 25-21, 19-25, 15-8).

Senior Kourtney Settle (Vallonia, Ind./Brownstown Central) led three players with double-digit kills with 14 kills over Capital. Sophomore Amanda Lelivelt (Chippewa Falls, Wis./Riverside Brookfield) added 12 kills, while classmate Brooke Harvey (Clinton, Ind./South Vermillion) recorded 11 kills in the win.

Senior Emily Young (Avon, Ind./Avon) had nine kills to round out the team's balanced hitting performance.

The Grizzlies hit .201 for the match, highlighted by a .344 effort in the second set.

Junior Ashley Bazier (Terre Haute, Ind./Terre Haute South) recorded 42 assists and added 18 digs defensively.

Senior Mackenzie Wieneke (Seymour, Ind./Seymour) led the team with 34 digs. Freshman Libby Stahl (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli) recorded 18 digs, while senior Theresa Brown (Indianapolis, Ind./Franklin Central) rounded out the team's defensive effort with 10 digs.

Against Muskingum, Harvey had a season-high 14 kills as Franklin tallied three players with 10 or more kills in the match. Lelivelt recorded 12 kills, while Settle chipped in 10 kills. Young rounded out the balanced attack with eight kills.

Bazier had 42 assists in helping distribute the team's offensive attack. She also recorded 18 digs defensively.

Wieneke had 31 digs and added two serving aces in the five-set match. Brown chipped in with 21 digs, while sophomore Sarah Labra (Indianapolis, Ind./Ben Davis) had 16 digs in the match.

Franklin concludes play in the Rose-Hulman Invitational on Sunday, September 13 with matches against Ohio Wesleyan University at 11 a.m. before facing Millikin University (Illinois) at 1 p.m.
