Box Score Franklin, Ind. - The Franklin College men's soccer team picked up its first victory of the season with a 2-1 victory over Trine University on Saturday afternoon from Faught Stadium.
The match opened the third annual Daniel Schuetz Community Classic. Transylvania University and Carroll University (Wisconsin) round out the four-team tournament field.
Franklin (1-3) took an early lead on a goal by sophomore Austin Storm (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove) in the fifth minute. The goal came off a corner kick by senior Austin Fundenberger (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central).
The Grizzlies maintained the one-goal lead until Trine's Ben Moricz netted an unassisted goal in the 72nd minute.
However, Franklin regained the lead 40 seconds later when sophomore Mason Krupa (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike) sent a long ball into the attacking zone. Junior Antonio Gioe (Martinsville, Ind./Mooresville) pulled the visiting goalkeeper off the goal line, and then scored into the empty net.
The hosts held onto the 2-1 lead as senior goalkeeper Cody Chapman (Vincennes, Ind./Washington) made five of his six saves in the second half.
Individually, Gioe attempted a match-high five shots, with four shots on goal. Fundenberger had three shots in the victory, while junior Logan McNamee (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove) and Storm each had one shot for the Grizzlies.
Franklin faces Carroll to conclude play in the Daniel Schuetz Community Classic on Sunday, September 13, at 2 p.m. from Faught Stadium. Live statistics and video of the match will be available.
