Franklin, Ind. - The Franklin College women's basketball team improved to 2-0 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) play with a 48-47 overtime victory over Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology on Wednesday inside the Spurlock Center.
The top two defensive teams in the conference lowered their season averages in the contest.
Franklin (5-1, 2-0 HCAC) shot 37 percent in the first half and held a 25-24 lead. Rose-Hulman (5-2, 1-1 HCAC) scored the first six points of the third quarter to take a 30-25 lead. The visitors led 32-29 heading into the final 10 minutes.
Franklin took a 33-32 lead after a layup by junior Kayle Comer (Brownsburg, Ind./Brownsburg) with 8:06 remaining. Junior Lauren DeSutter (Pittsboro, Ind./Tri-West) connected on a three-point field goal to give Franklin a 37-32 lead with 3:38 left.
Rose-Hulman responded with five straight points to tie the contest. A jumper by senior Katie Brewer (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli) gave the Grizzlies a 39-37 lead at the 1:35 mark.
However, a jumper by Rose-Hulman's Cassidy Cain tied the game with just over one minute left. DeSutter missed a potential game-winning shot with four seconds left.
In overtime, Brewer scored six of her 14 points during the extra frame. Two free throws by Comer gave Franklin a 45-52 lead with 20 seconds left. Later, Brewer drained two free throws after a missed three pointer by Rose-Hulman gave the Grizzlies a 47-42 advantage. Chiarra Franklin made a layup with eight seconds left cut the lead to 47-44 with eight seconds left. DeSutter split two free throws to secure the victory.
Brewer recorded her fifth straight double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds. She tied her career-high with seven blocks. DeSutter added 12 points and five assists.
Franklin returns to action on Saturday, December 12, at 1 p.m. when it travels to Earlham College.
