Franklin, Ind. - The Franklin College women's soccer team advanced to Saturday's Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament championship match behind a 3-1 semifinal win over Mount St. Joseph University on Wednesday at Faught Stadium.
Franklin (16-2), the tournament's No. 2 seed, will play at top seed Hanover College on Saturday, November 7, at 11 a.m.
Freshman Maddie Fleet (Indianapolis, Ind./Perry Meridian) netted the game-winning goal in the 54th minute after drilling a shot from 30 yards out to the upper left corner of the goal. She later assisted on the insurance goal by freshman Olivia Fisher (Clayton, Ind./Cascade) in the 75th minute.
MSJ (10-6-3), the tournament's No. 3 seed, took the early lead on a goal by Morgan Knasel in the ninth minute.
The Lions would maintain the lead until the 41st minute when Fleet drew a foul in the 18-yard box for a penalty kick. Junior Audra Lane (Washington, Ind./Washington) successfully converted the penalty kick to square the match.
Franklin held a 9-7 shot advantage for the match, including a 6-2 mark in the second half. Sophomore Jess Silva (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove), Lane, and Fisher each recorded two shots in the match.
Sophomore goalkeeper Jessica Young (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli) made three saves in the match to secure the victory.
Franklin reaches the championship match of the HCAC tournament for the second straight year.
