Box Score Olivet, Mich. - The Franklin College women's basketball team placed three players in double figures in a 56-44 road victory against Olivet College on Saturday afternoon. The Grizzlies have won three consecutive games.
Freshman Courtney Phillips (Connersville, Ind./Connersville) scored a career-high 14 points to lead the balanced offensive attack. Senior Katie Brewer (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli) recorded her third straight double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Brewer also added seven blocks. Junior Kayle Comer (Brownsburg, Ind./Brownsburg) chipped in 10 points.
Franklin (3-1) used a strong defensive effort, holding the Comets to 26.8 percent shooting and forcing 25 turnovers.
The Grizzlies held a 14-11 lead at the end of the first quarter. Brewer pushed the margin to six points, 25-19, at the 4:50 mark of the second quarter. A basket by Phillips and a free throw by Comer gave the visitors a 28-19 halftime advantage.
Franklin held Olivet scoreless for the final 6:34 of the first half and used an 8-0 run during the span.
In the second half, a layup by sophomore Riley Achenbach (Shelbyville, Ind./Shelbyville) gave Franklin a 35-21 lead with 4:46 remaining in the third quarter. The Grizzlies took their largest lead of the game, 44-23, after another layup from Achenbach.
Franklin took a 45-29 lead in the fourth quarter, but Olivet (2-3) attempted a rally by cutting the deficit to eight points, 49-41, at the 3:37 mark. However, a three-point play by Comer increased the margin into double digits at 52-41 with 2:07 remaining. Two free throws each by junior Sarah Taylor (Fishers, Ind./Fishers) and Achenbach in the final minute sealed the victory.
Franklin returns to action on Saturday, December 5, at 2 p.m. when it opens Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play against Defiance College from the Spurlock Center.
