Volleyball Sweeps Earlham, Rallies to Defeat Albion in Saturday Matches

Richmond, Ind. - The Franklin College volleyball team increased its winning streak to six matches with two victories at Earlham College on Saturday afternoon.

The Grizzlies swept Earlham (25-16, 25-23, 25-13) in the opener before rallying from a 2-0 deficit to defeat Albion College (22-25, 22-25, 25-14, 25-17, 15-11).

Franklin improved to 12-9 on the season and stands 2-0 in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) after the victory over Earlham.

In Saturday's opener, sophomore Amanda Lelivelt (Chippewa Falls, Wis./Riverside Brookfield) led Franklin's offensive attack with 13 kills and a .722 hitting percentage. Senior Kourtney Settle (Vallonia, Ind./Brownstown Central) recorded 10 kills and a .444 hitting percentage in the victory.

Sophomore Brooke Harvey (Clinton, Ind./South Vermillion) added eight kills, while senior Emily Young (Avon, Ind./Avon) rounded out the effort with seven kills.

Franklin recorded a .379 hitting percentage in the straight-set win, highlighted by 17 kills and two errors in the third set.

Junior Ashley Bazier (Terre Haute, Ind./Terre Haute South) collected 39 assists.

Senior Mackenzie Wieneke (Seymour, Ind./Seymour) led a balanced defensive effort with nine digs. Classmate Theresa Brown (Indianapolis, Ind./Franklin Central) posted eight digs, and led the team with three serving aces. Bazier chipped in seven digs.

Against Albion, the Grizzlies hit .270 or better in the third and fourth sets to square the match. The team collected eight kills compared to three errors in the deciding fifth set.

Three players reached double figures in kills, led by Lelivelt with 13 kills. Harvey added 11 kills, while Settle tallied 10 kills in the match. Young rounded out the attack with seven kills.

Bazier posted 46 assists and had 20 digs defensively.

The Grizzlies recorded 11 serving aces, led by Settle and Young each with three.

Wieneke registered 33 digs, two aces, and three assists in the victory. Brown rounded out the strong efforts with 21 digs.

Franklin returns to action when it hosts Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology on Wednesday, October 7, at 7 p.m. in HCAC play from the Spurlock Center. The match will also be the program's annual Dig Pink Game to raise public awareness for breast cancer.
