Franklin, Ind. - Franklin College senior Austin Fundenberger (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) set the men's soccer program record for career goals in tallying the game-winning effort with five minutes left in regulation in a 2-1 win over Manchester University on Wednesday evening at Faught Stadium.
All three goals scored in the match came in the second half. Franklin (7-8-2, 4-3-1 HCAC) kept its hopes alive for a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference postseason berth with the victory. The Grizzlies conclude the regular season at third-place Earlham College on Saturday, October 31, at 3 p.m. in Richmond, Indiana. Franklin trails fourth-place Transylvania University by two points and is three points behind Earlham.
Franklin scored 11 seconds in the second half on a goal by freshman Luke Oliver (Marion, Ind./Marion) beat Manchester's goalkeeper Brady Forman after receiving a pass from sophomore Cam Mattern (Pittsboro, Ind./Brownsburg) and Fundenberger.
Manchester answered with a goal in the 50th minute to square the match.
The two teams battled back-and-forth for control of the match until Fundenberger fired a shot past Forman for the eventual game-winning tally in the 85th minute. The goal marked his 23rd career goal and set the program record for career goals.
The Grizzlies maintained an 18-8 shot advantage in the contest, including a 12-1 edge in the first half. Fundenberger tallied a match-high four shots. Junior Antonio Gioe (Martinsville, Ind./Mooresville) and sophomore Austin Storm (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove) each recorded three shots in the victory. Three other players attempted two shots in the match.
Senior goalkeeper Cody Chapman (Vincennes, Ind./Washington) recorded two saves during the 90-minute match.
