Box Score Cincinnati, Ohio - The Franklin College men's soccer team won its Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference opener 1-0 at Mount St. Joseph University on Friday evening.
Playing in rainy and windy conditions, the Grizzlies (4-5-1) found the back of the net in the 40th minute on a goal by freshman Blaine Fuhs (Washington, Ind./Washington Catholic).
Sophomore Cam Mattern (Pittsboro, Ind./Brownsburg) played a free kick to freshman Trey Floyd (Fishers, Ind./Fishers) to set up the scoring chance. Floyd delivered a pass to the back post before Fuhs finished with a shot.
Franklin's defense held MSJ to four shots on goal for the match. Senior goalkeeper Cody Chapman (Vincennes, Ind./Washington) recorded his second shutout of the season. MSJ looked for a game-tying goal in the second half and attempted two shots in the last five minutes of the match. However, the Grizzlies denied the comeback attempt to secure the shutout.
Senior Austin Fundenberger (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) attempted a match-high seven shots. Fuhs added two shots, while four players each had one shot in the road victory.
Franklin returns to the pitch on Wednesday, October 7, at 7 p.m. when it hosts Transylvania University from Faught Stadium. Live statistics of the match will be available.
