Franklin, Ind. - The Franklin College women's basketball team outscored Earlham College 17-4 over the final 9:35 to pick up a 56-43 home victory on Saturday from the Spurlock Center. The Grizzlies remain tied atop the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) standings with a 4-0 record.
After Earlham (3-8, 0-4 HCAC) tied the game at 39-39 at the 9:35 mark, the Grizzlies scored on six of their next seven possessions. Sophomore Lauren DeSutter (Pittsboro, Ind./Tri-West) connected on three consecutive jumpers to give Franklin a 45-39 lead with 6:11 left.
A jumper by senior Nichole Thompson (Greenwood, Ind./Greenwood) gave the hosts a 50-41 advantage with 3:51 remaining. Another basket by DeSutter pushed the margin to double figures, 52-41, at the 3:11 mark.
The Grizzlies (6-4, 4-0 HCAC) held Earlham to two field goals during the late surge.
DeSutter scored a game-high 14 points and had four steals defensively. Junior Katie Brewer (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli) added eight points. Senior Lindsey Dall (Brownsburg, Ind./Brownsburg) and freshman Madi Kolthoff (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove) each scored seven points.
Franklin held the Quakers to 27.8 percent shooting in the first half in holding a 28-20 advantage. The Grizzlies used a 7-2 spurt over the final 2:17 of the first half to take the eight point lead into intermission.
