Franklin, Ind. - Franklin College junior Austin Fundenberger (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) scored one goal and added two assists, while sophomore Antonio Gioe (Martinsville, Ind./Mooresville) netted two goals as the men's soccer team defeated Principia College (Ill.) 3-2 on Friday from Faught Stadium.
Franklin has won consecutive matches and stands 3-3 on the season.
Fundenberger broke a 2-2 tie with a penalty-kick goal in the 67th minute.
Gioe scored two first-half goals. He leads the team with three goals scored for the season.
The sophomore scored the first of his two goals in the 12th minute after drilling a shot from 10 yards out. Fundenberger set up the scoring chance after flicking the ball from 35 yards away from the goal.
The hosts took a 2-0 advantage in the 22nd minute when Gioe headed in a shot from the six-yard box inside the left post. Fundenberger once again assisted on the goal after passing the ball from the left side.
Principia (0-7) got on the scoreboard in the 29th minute on an unassisted goal from McGuire Semnacher. The Panthers tied the match five minutes later on a goal from Leif Carlson. Nate Waters assisted on the corner-kick goal.
In the second half, Fundenberger was fouled in the box while making a cut and awarded a penalty kick. The junior calmly drilled the ball into the back of the net for the game-winning tally.
The Grizzlies held a 15-8 shot advantage, including a 9-4 margin in the second half. The team also had four of the match's five corner kicks. Senior Brandon Iaria (Indianapolis, Ind./Southport) and Fundenberger each led Franklin with four shots. Gioe converted both of his shots for goals in the match.
Franklin returns to action on Monday, September 22 at 4:30 p.m. when it travels to Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Indiana. The match was rescheduled after storms postponed the match on September 10.
