Box Score Franklin, Ind. - DePauw University relied on a strong defensive effort to pick up a 79-60 victory over the Franklin College men's basketball team on Tuesday in the Grizzlies' home opener at the Spurlock Center.
Franklin (0-2) was led by junior guard Trae Washington (Bloomington, Ind./Bloomington South) with 13 points. Sophomore guard Aaron Mann (Indianapolis, Ind./Howe) followed closely behind with 12 points.
DePauw (1-0) jumped out to a 14-7 lead early in the first half. Later, the Grizzlies used a quick 9-2 run to trim the deficit to eight points, 31-23, with six minutes left in the period. However, the visitors took a 39-26 lead into the halftime break.
In the second half, a three-point field goal by sophomore guard Robbie Prather (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli) and a basket by freshman forward Jim Mace (Brazil, Ind./Northview) got Franklin within eight points early in the stanza.
That was as close as the Grizzlies got in the second half.
Mace and Prather each added nine points. Sophomore guard Brandon Scruggs (Royal Center, Ind./Pioneer) scored seven points off the bench.
DePauw was led by Tommy Fernitz with 15 points and eight rebounds.
Franklin returns to action on Saturday, November 22, at 7 p.m. when it travels to No. 25-ranked Centre College (Ky.).
