Box Score Lexington, Ky. - Junior forward Austin Fundenberger (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) scored a hat trick in leading the Franklin College men's soccer team to a 4-0 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) victory at Transylvania University on Tuesday.
The match was delayed nearly three hours due to severe weather and concluded just before midnight.
Franklin (5-4-1, 2-0 HCAC) found its offensive rhythm midway through the first half. Fundenberger found the back of the net in the 35th minute to give the visitors a 1-0 advantage.
In the second half, the Grizzlies found the back of the net twice in a three-minute span to take a 3-0 lead. Fundenberger beat Transylvania goalkeeper Cody Waltrip in the 62nd minute. Then, sophomore Antonio Gioe (Martinsville, Ind./Mooresville) tallied his fourth goal of the season in the 65th minute. Freshman Austin Storm (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove) set up Gioe to record his first collegiate assist.
Fundenberger concluded his strong night with a goal in the 83rd minute. He now has scored seven goals this fall.
Franklin recorded 10 or its 14 shots after intermission, highlighted by Fundenberger's six shots in the match. Gioe attempted four shots.
Junior goalkeeper Cody Chapman (Vincennes, Ind./Washington) made four saves, including two stops to keep the match scoreless during the first half.
Tuesday's shutout win marked the third time that Transylvania had been shutout in its last 14 home HCAC matches – dating back to a scoreless draw against Earlham College in the 2011 tournament final.
Transylvania (5-5, 1-1 HCAC) was led by Max Robinson's three shots.
Franklin returns to action on Saturday, October 11 at 6 p.m. when it hosts Defiance College during homecoming from Faught Stadium. Live statistics and video of the match will be available.
