Franklin, Ind. - The Franklin College men's soccer team picked up a 2-1 home victory over the College of Mount St. Joseph in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) opener for both teams on Saturday from Faught Stadium.
Junior Austin Fundenberger (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) scored the game-winning goal for Franklin (4-4-1, 1-0 HCAC), which enjoyed a season-high 26 shots in the match.
The Grizzlies took a 1-0 lead in the 25th minute on a goal by freshman Mason Krupa (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike). That lead would stand up until MSJ's Colton Lipps found the back of the net in the 65th minute.
On the ensuing possession, Franklin's Fundenberger dribbled down the middle of the defense and fired a shot just under the crossbar to give the Grizzlies a 2-1 advantage. Fundenberger attempted 11 shots in the match.
The hosts also had two other excellent scoring opportunities, when they hit the crossbar and the right post later in the second half.
Senior Brandon Iaria (Indianapolis, Ind./Southport) attempted six shots and Krupa added three shots.
Franklin returns to action on Tuesday, October 7 at 7 p.m. when it travels to Transylvania University in Lexington, Kentucky for another HCAC match.
