Big Plays Highlight Homecoming Football Win over Earlham

Franklin, Ind. - Senior running back Joey Pasquale (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville) scored three touchdowns as the Franklin College football team earned a 49-20 win over Earlham College in the 2014 homecoming game on Saturday from Faught Stadium. The Grizzlies improved to 4-0 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) play and are now 4-2 for the season.

Franklin had four scores of 17 yards or longer in the contest.

Pasquale tied the contest at 7-7 on a 25-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Grant Welp (Ferdinand, Ind./Forest Park) with 1:04 left in the first quarter.

Sophomore Kole Stogner (Greenwood, Ind./Greenwood) tallied a 17-yard rushing touchdown to give the Grizzlies 14-10 advantage at the 8:57 mark of the first half. Earlham (0-6, 0-4 HCAC) got a 23-yard field goal from Ryan Acosta to cut Franklin's lead to 14-13 midway through the second quarter.

However, the Grizzlies scored twice over the final 1:43 of the period to pull away from the Quakers. Junior split end Mason Deal (Indianapolis, Ind./Perry Meridian) caught a 13-yard pass from Welp. Then, senior Sam Otley (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli) put Franklin ahead 28-13 with a one-yard score with eight seconds left in the first half.

Franklin scored three quick touchdowns in the second half to build a 49-13 lead. Pasquale was on the receiving end of a 20-yard strike from Welp just 36 seconds into the period. Later, Pasquale had a 35-yard rushing touchdown to cap his big offensive day.

Sophomore quarterback A.J. Puente (Delray Beach, Fla./Boca Christian) found junior wing back Kendal Butler (Toledo, Ill./Cumberland) for a six-yard score with 13:04 remaining in the game.

Individually, Welp completed 22 of 28 passes for 302 yards and three touchdowns. Pasquale gained a team-best 78 yards on the ground. He also caught six passes for 71 yards and two touchdowns. Deal also had six receptions for a team-high 88 receiving yards. Senior wing back Zach Cole (Middletown, Ind./Shenandoah) had five catches for 72 yards.

Defensively, junior linebacker Jeremiah Windell (Corydon, Ind./Corydon Central) made a game-high 14 tackles. Senior linebacker Trevor Yates (Kendallville, Ind./East Noble) recorded nine tackles, while sophomore linebacker Ethan Bailey (Greenwood, Ind./Greenwood) added eight stops.

Franklin returns to action on Saturday, October 18 at 1:30 p.m. when it travels to Mount St. Joseph University in Cincinnati, Ohio, in a matchup between the last two HCAC unbeaten teams.
