Box Score Cincinnati, Ohio - Balanced scoring once again led the Franklin College women's basketball team to a 70-62 road Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) victory over the College of Mount St. Joseph on Saturday. The win improved the Grizzlies to 10-7 on the season.
The team remains in second place in the conference with an 8-2 mark.
Franklin had four double-figure scorers, led by 13 points each from sophomore Katie Brewer (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli) and freshman Mandy Fisher (Mooresville, Ind./Mooresville). Brewer had a double-double with a career-high 14 rebounds. Junior Lindsey Dall (Brownsburg, Ind./Brownsburg) added 11 points and junior Nichole Thompson (Greenwood, Ind./Greenwood) scored 10 points.
The visitors trailed 12-4 in the first five minutes of the game. A three-point play by freshman Hanna Ballard (Columbus, Ind./Columbus North) gave the Grizzlies a 22-20 lead with 6:29 left in the first half. Freshman Sarah Taylor (Fishers, Ind./Fishers) put Franklin ahead 33-26 with a three pointer with 59 seconds left in the period.
Franklin led 34-28 at halftime behind an 18-4 advantage in bench points. The team also outscored the Lions 14-2 in second-chance offensive opportunities.
In the second half, Ballard made a layup to give Franklin a 43-36 lead with 15:40 left. Mount St. Joseph (2-15, 2-8 HCAC) used a 9-2 run to cut the deficit to two points, 47-45, at the 8:38 mark.
Later, Franklin used a 10-2 run to push the advantage to double digits, 57-47, with 5:19 left. A three-point play by Dall created that 10-point margin.
Mount St. Joseph held Franklin to four points over the next three minutes to trail 61-59. Fisher would convert a three-point play with 1:51 remaining to give the team a 64-59 advantage. However, MSJ's Meredith Hartfiel made a three-point field goal on the next offensive possession to get the deficit back to two points, 64-62, with 1:38 left.
Franklin scored on its ensuing trip after Thompson made a layup. The Grizzlies forced two MSJ turnovers and made four free throws in the final 36 seconds to secure the victory.
The team shot 51.9 percent (14-of-27) from the floor in the second half. For the game the team made 18-of-24 free throw attempts (75 percent) and out-rebounded the Lions 42-37.
Mount St. Joseph was led by Tara Dennis with 18 points and 14 rebounds.
