Box Score Franklin, Ind. - The Franklin College women's basketball team had its six-game winning streak stopped on Saturday in a 57-54 home Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) contest to Defiance College on alumni day in the Spurlock Center.
Defiance's Erica King hit a three-point field goal with one second left to give the visitors the victory. She made seven three pointers in scoring a game-high 23 points.
Franklin (8-7, 6-2 HCAC) took a 52-51 lead with 53 seconds left after a layup from junior Nichole Thompson (Greenwood, Ind./Greenwood).
Defiance's Erica Smay made a three pointer to regain the lead, 54-52, with 37 seconds remaining. Thompson converted two free throws after she was fouled with 30 seconds left to tie the game.
Defiance's Kelsey Tietje missed a layup with five seconds left but the team retained possession after the ball was tipped out of the bounds. Megan Zachrich found King on the inbounds pass for the game-winning shot.
Franklin scored the game's first eight points and held a 10-3 lead at the 13:33 mark. Defiance used a 10-2 run to take a 13-12 lead with 7:13 remaining in the first half. The hosts took a 17-13 advantage following a layup from freshman Kayle Comer (Brownsburg, Ind./Brownsburg).
The visitors led 24-23 at halftime after a three pointer by King with 1:06 left in the first half.
Freshman Lauren DeSutter (Pittsboro, Ind./Tri-West) led the Grizzlies with 14 points. Thompson added 10 points and a game-high seven rebounds. Comer scored nine points and freshman Sarah Taylor (Fishers, Ind./Fishers) had eight points.
Franklin out-rebounded Defiance (6-9, 3-5 HCAC) 31-28 in the contest and had 15 assists on its 18 made field goals.
The Grizzlies return to action on Wednesday, January 22 at 7:30 p.m. when they travel to HCAC leader Transylvania University. Live statistics of the game will be available here.
