Volleyball Records Two Home Victories on Wednesday

Franklin, Ind. - The Franklin College volleyball team increased its winning streak to five matches with a pair of victories on Wednesday at the Spurlock Center. The Grizzlies defeated Olivet College in five sets (22-25, 25-21, 26-24, 19-25, 15-12) and Earlham College (25-14, 21-25, 25-17, 27-25).

In the first match, the Grizzlies (7-5) took a 2-1 set advantage by capturing the second and third sets. Franklin overcame a 19-13 deficit in the third set to win 13 of the final 18 points. Olivet (4-11) would force a deciding five set with a 25-19 triumph in the fourth frame.

The fifth set featured back-and-forth action. Olivet held an 8-4 lead before the Grizzlies squared the set at 12 points each. Following a timeout, Franklin captured the match by winning the next three points for a 15-12 victory in the set.

Sophomore Emily Young (Avon, Ind./Avon) led the offensive attack with 16 kills. She hit .289 for the match and had nine digs. Junior Jordan Finke (Indianapolis, Ind./Lutheran) also reached double figures in kills, tallying 10 in the five-set triumph. Finke added her team-leading blocks total for the season with four against Olivet.

Freshman Ashley Bazier (Terre Haute, Ind./Terre Haute South) recorded 37 assists, while sophomore Mackenzie Wieneke (Seymour, Ind./Seymour) led the defensive effort with 34 digs. Bazier recorded 18 digs in the match and freshman Alex Colclazier (Greenfield, Ind./Greenfield-Central) tallied 19 digs.

Against Earlham, the Grizzlies earned a quick 25-14 victory in the first set. However, the Quakers (3-11) answered with a 25-21 triumph in the second frame. The Grizzlies regained momentum with a 25-17 win in the third set. However, Earlham attempted a comeback in the fourth set. Franklin saved three set points after trailing 24-22 to win three straight points. On its second match point the hosts converted on an attack to secure the victory.

Young once again led the offensive effort with 10 kills. Finke added nine kills and sophomore Kourtney Settle (Vallonia, Ind./Brownstown Central) recorded eight kills.

Bazier tallied 27 assists and sophomore Theresa Brown (Indianapolis, Ind./Franklin Central) had a team-high 18 digs. Colclazier contributed 17 digs in the victory.

Franklin returns to the court on Saturday, September 21 at 3 p.m. when it travels to DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana.
